3 Google Tricks for Busy, yet Savvy, SLPs

Google has a ton of underused gems that can really save SLPs some time and difficulty. Today, I'm sharing with you three of the ones I use most frequently.

1. SITE SPECIFIC SEARCH If a website doesn't have a search function or has a terrible search function but amazing resources (*cough* *cough* ASHA), you can use google to search exclusively on that website.

1) Go to Google.com 2) Enter your search term 3) After the search term type the following without the www and no space between the word "site," colon, and the domain name:

site:example.com

Replace "example.com" with whatever the website's main domain name is. So for example, if I wanted to search ASHA's site for Vocal Cord Dysfunction, I could type into Google:

Vocal Cord Dysfunction site:asha.org

You can also put the search term in quotes so that you only get results with those words appearing all together in that order without any interrupting words, e.g.:

"Vocal Cord Dysfunction" site:asha.org

I use this all the time for one of my favorite sites for free online SLP games that doesn't have a great search feature, quia.com. So I might google something like

/s/ medial site:quia.com

to find games targeting that sound in that word position from that website. If you can't remember that, you can always go to Google's advanced search feature (at google.com/advanced_search) and enter the site you want to search within.

2. FILE TYPE SEARCH

Another Google feature I love is using the advanced search to find only specific file types, like if I know specifically that I am looking for a PPT or PDF file on a certain website. Go to google.com/advanced_search and indicate the "file type."

3. IMAGE USAGE RIGHTS SEARCH

In Google's advanced search, you can also search for images based on the usage rights with such options as "free to use, share or modify, even commercially." This is great for SLPs who need images to use for products they sell online.

I ❤️ Google!
